If there was a $1 Salary CEO Club, Jim Barkesdale would be a founder. Jobs's salary stayed $1 with no bonus since 1998, a year after he returned to the company. He exchanged options on a split-adjusted 55 million Apple shares for 10 million share of restricted stock, which gives him about a 1.2% stake, worth $656.8 million today.
CEO John Chambers, who once was the most paid CEO in the valley taking more than $1.3 million in salary and bonus in 2000, agreed to reduce his salary from $350,000 to $1 in April 2001 in the midst of laying off up to 8,500 employees. It continued 'till August in 2004. Chambers also made more than $150 million by exercising stock options.

バレー一番の高給取りとして鳴らしたシスコCEOジョン・チェンバース氏は2000年、年俸130万ドル＋ボーナスだったのが2001年4月、8,500人レイオフの最中ということで年俸1ドルを宣言(2004年まで継続)。彼もストックオプション行使で1億5千万ドルがっぽり儲けている。
因みに2000年に年俸ゼロとしたオラクルCEOラリー･エリソン氏は、2001年に10年近く前に支給されて手付かずのままになっていたストックオプション2,300万株の売却益でバレーのサラリー史上最高の年収入7億600万ドルを記録している(売却のタイミングが余りに良く「ラリーの鼻はトリュフのブタ並み」と訴えられた件は寄付金拠出で和解)。
