Why English is so Hard to Learn!

- The farm was used to produce produce.(農場は農産物の栽培に使われた)
- The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.(ゴミ捨て場は満杯で、それ以上のゴミはお断りしなくてはならなかった)
- We must polish the Polish furniture.(ポーランド製家具を磨かねば)
- He could lead if he would get the lead out.(急ぐなら彼が先でもいい)
- The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.(兵士は砂漠にデザートを置いていくことにした)
- Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.(今のようなタイミングはない、プレゼントを出すなら今だ、そう彼は思った)
- A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.(バスドラムの表にスズキの絵が描かれていた)
- When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.(撃たれた鳩は茂みに頭から落ちた)
- I did not object to the object.(その目的に反対だったわけではない)

そう。はっきり言って、英語はクレイジーな言語なのだよ。
「eggplant(なす)」に「egg(卵)」は入ってないし、「hamburger(ハンバーガー)」に「ham(ハム)」は入ってない、「pineapple(パイナップル)」には「apple(りんご)」も「pine(松)」も入っていない。
「Sweetmeats」はミートと言いつつ砂糖菓子で、「sweetbreads」はスイートと言いつつ甘くない肉(胸腺)だ。そんな矛盾なら探せばいくらでもある。「quicksand(流砂、砂地獄、泥沼)」はクイックと言いつつゆっくりくるし、「boxing rings(ボクシングのリング)」はリング(輪)と言いつつ四角い。「guinea pig(ギニアピッグ)」はギニア産でも豚でもない。
「driveway」には駐車し、「parkway」では走る。トラックは「ship(出荷)」で、ship(船)は「cargo(貨物)」。
どこをどう間違ったら「slim chance」と「fat chance(望み薄)」が同義語で、「wise man(賢人)」と「wise guy(マフィア)」が反対語になるのだ?
自宅は「burn down(焼け落ち)」ながら「burn up(全焼)」し、書類は「filling it out(全部埋め)」ながら「fill in(記入)」し、警報アラームは「going on(オン)」になって「goes off(突然鳴り出す)」言語の、この他に類を見ない狂いっぷりには驚くばかりだ。星は「out(出る)」と見えるのに、ライトは「out(切れる)」と見えない。
そして最後に。コンピュータは終了しようと思ったらSTART押さなきゃならない!!

「平らげる」じゃなくて、「放棄する」「廃棄する」あたりがいいかも。
あ、ほんとだ、なおしました、ありがとうございます! こないだの語源のお話おもしろかったです。シャツとスカートをスキンとつなげて考えたこと、なかった…!
