米国初のネット依存症更正プログラム:reSTART - First Internet Addiction Rehab Center in US

The other day I saw a news report about reSTART, the first addiction recovery program specifically designed for serious sufferers of the Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD).

They live offline, doing nature hikes and stuff like that to regain a social skills. The environment seems no different from YMCA summer camp (the one at Half Moon Bay where I send my kids in summer doesn't even provide electricity), yet the fee is lofty; $14,500 for 45 days program, and $27,000 for 90 days.

Included in the 45-day tuition:
Food and Meals
Retreat Center Overnight Accommodations for 45 Days*
Clinical Evaluation and Assessment
Customized treatment planning, relapse prevention, and aftercare coordination
1x1 Individualized psychotherapy
Daily personal counseling, life coaching, skills training, mentoring, and mindfulness based stress reduction
Weekly high adventure recreational and fitness activities tailored to individual needs
Average 1-6 guests at a time (Fee Schedule for 2009)

Hmmmm, I'd rather choose a long stay in Japanese hot springs... but what's even more surprising to me is that they already got some participants. Do you think this whole thing makes sense?

Salman Rushdie Calls ex-girlfriend "radioactive bucket of stress"

Genius quote of the month.
"she's an unstable person who carries around a large, radioactive bucket of stress wherever she goes."-Salman Rushdie, in response to his ex-girlfriend, Pia Glenn, who told Britain's Mail after the split that he was "dysfunctional."

NHK featuring Twitter usage at Keio University

Watch before they delete them.

As Twitter launched Japanese mobile site Thursday (the first foreign platform), Biz Stone visited Japan and NHK featured the Twitter, introducing how early adoptors (Keio University students, professors, UN staffs) are using it.

It's edited so that non-users could understand what it is. The way they spotlight the Keio student posting a minuscule thingy ("I've got a pack of oranges from my mom") to get dozens of replies in minutes may be intimidating. Also, they call it "Tsubuyaki (Tweets) services" at one point, which sounds a bit awkward.

UPDATE: Hey, another one! This one is featuring the Tokyo Meetup. No negativity. Much better.

Today in 1964 MLK wins the Nobel Peace Prize

45 years ago today Martin Luther King Jr. became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. 45
I think Alfred Nobel would know what I mean when I say that I accept this award in the spirit of a curator of some precious heirloom which he holds in trust for its true owners - all those to whom beauty is truth and truth beauty - and in whose eyes the beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold. - Martin Luther King, Jr., Extract from the Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Oslo, December 10, 1964

Now people around the world say it's too soon to award the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama. Sure, he hasn't accomplished anything yet and Obama himself is well aware of it.

But read carefully what Alfred Nobel said in his will. He said, the prize should be awarded to the person who has done the most for peace "during the preceding year."

What Obama has done last year?  He won the presidential election, putting an end to the long sorrow after Dr. King's assassination and brought back some hope.

Remember how Dr. King opened his "I have a dream" speech?  He said,  "Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation."  Now people are busy telling we are yet to see what Obama can do in four years. But he is not like any other US presidents.

As they had to choose Dr. King in 1964, not 1969, they had to choose Obama this year.  The exhibition From King to Obama opened at the Nobel Peace Center on 25 September.

YouTube hits one billion views a day

Celebrating the third anniversary of its acquisition by Google, YouTube co-founder and CEO, Chad Hurley, revealed it had passed a new milestone of one billion video hits per day.

YouTube has yet to make money but executives are optimistic.

As NY Times noted, the figure (≒30 billion monthly views) is much bigger than comScore's August estimates of 10 billion monthly views in the US.  YouTube's international audience is double-size of that of US domestic?

When they debunked the top five myths about YouTube in July (NYT speculates it was published partly in response to Spencer Wang, a Credit Suisse analyst, who predicted that YouTube would lose $470 million in 2009),  they said "We are at a point where growth is definitely good for our bottom line, not bad."  So, it's a good sign.

Wave of...unproductivity?

Google Wave was launched, and some early reviewers are already flooded with ...noise.
And, worse, when I look at my Google Wave page I see dozens of people all typing to me in real time. I don’t know where to look and keeping up with this real time noise is less like email, which is like tennis (hit one ball at a time) and more like dodging a machine gun of tennis balls. Much more mentally challenging." - Robert Scoble

Humnnn... Isn't that because it's Robert Scoble (the first guy that maxed out at five thousand friends on Facebook)?   LATimes says it's a great collaborate tool for journalism.  Well, maybe he's right; we need more focus before jumping into the Wave.

Google Wave

Louis Gray
