WikiLeak's Alleged Leaker Bradley Manning in Hellish Solitary Confinement

Bradley Manning, alleged leaker of secret government documents to WikiLeaks, turned 23 in jail Friday.  His attorney told Daily Beast's Denver Nicks that those are the books on his birthday and Christmas wish list;

But his condition seems to be deteriorating.  As Salon's Glenn Greenwald reported on Wednesday, he's been sitting in a solitary confinement for seven straight months already.
Since his arrest in May, Manning has been a model detainee, without any episodes of violence or disciplinary problems.  He nonetheless was declared from the start to be a "Maximum Custody Detainee," the highest and most repressive level of military detention, which then became the basis for the series of inhumane measures imposed on him.

From the beginning of his detention, Manning has been held in intensive solitary confinement.  For 23 out of 24 hours every day - for seven straight months and counting -- he sits completely alone in his cell.  Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he's barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions.  For reasons that appear completely punitive, he's being denied many of the most basic attributes of civilized imprisonment, including even a pillow or sheets for his bed (he is not and never has been on suicide watch).

[...]And as is true of many prisoners subjected to warped treatment of this sort, the brig's medical personnel now administer regular doses of anti-depressants to Manning to prevent his brain from snapping from the effects of this isolation.

On top of that, he's been held under Prevention of Injury (POI) watch. No means to kill himself. No exercise. Not even allowed to go insane. Ah...that's horrible... Why?

US authorities have stepped up their efforts to prosecute Julian Assange by offering Bradley Manning, the American soldier allegedly responsible for leaking hundreds of thousands of government documents, the possibility of a plea bargain if he names the Wiki-Leaks founder as a fellow conspirator. There.  Maybe Manning is the only bargaining chip the US got for putting Julian Assange on criminal charge.

- The inhumane conditions of Bradley Manning's detention - Glenn Greenwald - Salon.com

The Independent

In the video below, you can view the gate of the brig where Manning has been held.
